Darkenfall
A choice-driven dark fantasy role-playing game told entirely in prose. No rendered world, no reflex tests — a story you move through by deciding what your character does, with a state that remembers what you chose.
Written, not rendered
Darkenfall is a text role-playing game in the choice-driven tradition rather than the parser tradition. You are never guessing at verbs or fighting an inventory system for the right phrasing. Each scene presents its situation in prose and offers a set of things your character could do; you pick one, and the story moves.
The design goal is a game that respects a reader's attention. Scenes are written to be read rather than skimmed, and the choices are meant to be genuinely difficult — options that trade one thing you care about against another, rather than an obviously correct path and two decoys.
The setting is dark fantasy: a world past its own high point, where what descends into shadow does not come back unchanged. Tone sits closer to folk horror and grim romance than to heroic questing.
How it plays
Choice-driven, not parser-driven
Every decision point is explicit. The interface is a page of prose and a set of options. Nothing is hidden behind syntax, and no progress depends on typing the right word.
Persistent character state
The game tracks who your character has become — what they carry, what they know, who they have wronged and who owes them. Choices set flags that later scenes read, so a decision made early can close or open a path chapters later without announcing that it did.
Consequence over failure
Darkenfall is built to branch rather than to end. Most decisions redirect the story instead of terminating it; the interesting outcome of a bad choice is usually a worse world, not a game-over screen.
Session-friendly
Chapters are structured to be finished in a sitting, and progress is saved continuously. The game is designed for the same fifteen minutes people currently spend on a phone doing something less interesting.
Everywhere you read
A text game has an unusual advantage: the same content works equally well on a monitor and a phone. Darkenfall is being built for desktop, iOS and Android from one codebase, with an interface that adapts to the screen rather than being ported to it.
